Weight Loss Liquid Diet – Cheat Meals
To keep your sanity on Liquid Diet, you can have one ‘cheat’ meal a week or if you are on not so strict liquid diet, once a day. Liquid Diets with a solid meal a day some people don’t consider ‘liquid diet’ any more, but as long as that cheat meal is healthy solid meal with nutrient content similar to shake content, it is acceptable meal. Cheat meals are healthy solid food meals with no sugar, no fast carbohydrates, no bad fats. Forget pizzas, alcohol of any kind (beer, wine etc), candies, cakes, sweets, potatoes, white rice, white bread, sodas etc. After week on shakes you will be thrilled with a solid healthy meal – cravings change is one of the things that happen on Liquid Diets. If you eat solid meal a day, this effect will not be so obvious, but it will help you to go through entire diet.
Calories in your cheat meal with its protein, carbohydrate, fat and fiber content must coincide with calories and content of a shake that this ‘cheat’ meal has replaced. Food choices for cheat meal are thus limited to:
- Fish and vegetables
- Meat and vegetables
- Eggs and low-fat or cottage cheese omelet with vegetables
- Salads as side dish
Generally, this meal should contain lean source of protein (lean cuts of meat, fish, omega-3 eggs, low fat and cottage cheese) and vegetables. Meat should be chicken and turkey breasts, chicken and turkey skinless thighs without any visible fats, veal, beef or pork schnitzels and steaks without visible fats. Fish can be any fresh (or even frozen) fish like tuna, salmon, sea bass, trout etc, or even sardines. Don’t be afraid of fish fats, because they are healthy fats. Vegetables should be spinach, broccoli, cauliflower – everything with great volume and plenty of fibers. Salads are lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and similar – forget potato and similar salads.
You can grill, boil or steam your food, but don’t add additional oil for preparing food. Olive or similar oils are ok for giving better taste, just be careful – one tablespoon of oil has 15g of oil (135 kcal). Eat lettuce or similar salad with this meal – without oil, just vinegar and some salt. When you start to eat this meal – eat it slowly and chew it many times – I even often close my eyes when I eat such meals on such diets.
Best time of the week/day for cheat meal is as first meal after post workout meal (PWM) shake on training days. If you take this meal after PWM (for example, one hour after PWM), allow yourself some carbs in it (beside veggies) – one single piece of whole wheat bread or baked potato or anything similar regarding amounts and carbs complexity. On non-training days avoid to have such meals or be very careful with meal content.
